During the beginning of 1930 the drought in the Midwest begins, this is one of the many factors that leads to the highest unemployment rate of 25 percent in 1933(page 537). This leads to the labeling of the Great Depression, these events leads population to put the women’s movement right on hold, since the major concern turns in the where next meal will come from, with no work in sight to provide as opposed to give women the right to work next to men. One of the most vivid images when comparing the 1920’s is the flamboyant flapper to the counterpart of the Great Depression during the 1930’s is the photograph by Dorothea Lange’s of Florence Owens titled the “Migrant Mother” (page 537). This showed a window to the farm families who suffered of the drought with nothing left. As president Roosevelt took over the nation he introduced the new deal in which helped some women workers by protecting them for organized labor (page 541). As through the thirties with the Depression and the strikes in which women were part of, a war started brewing in Europe in which by 1939 prompted for European countries to declare war on Germany. With many women been back to been housemakers this started to brew the second wave of feminism. Even know that after the postwar era where the prosperity growth went from $213 billion in 1945 to $500 billion in 1960 (page 595); many minorities were still living below the poverty line. Even know the great boost in the economy with many neighborhoods been created in the suburban areas, but the reality was that most of these areas were still racial segregated. During this time the cold war was also going with communist countries like the USSR, this prompted a hunt for Communist in the homeland, but also with this witch hunts created a hunt on lesbian and gay men as a threat. This kind of behavior even transpires to the work forces when during a job interviews the prospects would be asked “Have you ever had, or have you now, homosexual tendencies?” (Page 598). According to the Federal Government individuals with these tendencies were not suitable for the job. With many of this behaviors been showed by the Government and many social rights been violated, many members of the feminist movement sought to address them.
