Pacifica glanced at her watch, shivering slightly as she felt the cold New York breeze. She pulled her coat tighter. With her head down, she took a quick look at the boy sitting beside her. He stared straight ahead, eyes narrowed as if he had somewhere to be. He didn’t, he never did.
Brooklyn stared straight ahead, eyes focussed on the grimy yellow sign. He knew she was staring, but he let her stare. She kept looking at her watch. She had somewhere to be. Girls like her always had somewhere to be.

As he walked into the cafe, he noticed the rugged biker couple in the corner making out, almost spilling the chai latte on the table. He wrinkled his nose in disgust. Fucking bikers. Brooklyn walked to the counter to make his order.
“ One expre-,” he paused. “ One chai latte.”
Pacifica pushed Adam off her and straighten her shirt as she looked around the coffee shop. There was a man dressed in a blue flannel and her breath caught in her throat.
