The name of Abraham- meaning “Father of Many-” is finally given to Abram by God, also changing Sarai’s name to Sarah. He makes an everlasting Covenant with him, promising to be the God of Abraham's descendants and all the generations after them. Again, Abraham is promised that he is “part of God’s covenant, that he will have both land and descendants (Dempsey 237.)” The establishment of circumcision is spoken of and Abraham orders that all the males of his household be circumcised, including Ishmael. She births a baby boy named Isaac, which means laughter. Hagar and Ishmael are sent away, with the promise of Ishmael becoming a great nation.
