Is the internet ruining our memory, or is it helping build the inside of our brains? In Adam Clark Estes’s piece titled “Is Google Making Us Smart and Stupid at the Same Time”, Este is trying to point out is the internet unhealthy, or beneficial for us. With test and studies, can they prove if the internet has an effect our memory and human brain function? This piece of writing was done on July 15, 2011 for The Atlantic Daily. Mr. Adam previously worked for VICE Media, The Atlantic, and The Huffington Post, and currently a news editor for Gawker Media. In this article, he is writing to touch on a piece written by Nicholas Carr titled “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”

“When the brain reroutes how we recall information, it develops different types of memory capabilities” (Estes). He gives an example of if someone asks you a question, is your first response imagining the question, or is your first response to look it up on the internet and see how you would find the answer for that question. According to Cary Small, a neuroscience professor at UCLA, “The brain is very specialized in its circuitry and if you repeat mental tasks over and over it will strengthen certain neural circuits and ignore others” (Estes). This is an example showing if you continue to look up information on the internet, your brains response will be the same every time. With every question, new keywords will pop up in your head. They state in the article the more you do it, the better you will be at it. For example, if you look up another question, your brain will produce keywords that will help you answer the question. In a way, it strengthens your memory. These are all examples of how the internet can be affecting our memory, and brains in good ways. As of everything in this world there are also negative effects of something that can be
