The main kind of architecture was gothic architecture. Gothic architecture consisted of gargoyles, the people believed that gargoyles protected you from evil spirits. Gargoyles have a practical purpose: They’re spouts, enabling rain water to drain off the roof and gush through their mouths before plummeting to the ground. Another purpose of the gargoyle was to scare people into going inside of the cathedral for protection against the demons outside. Gothic architecture is known for having a tall design. The medieval people had to learn to spread the weight of the stone walls to make the cathedrals taller. One thing they invented to help with this problem was the flying buttress. These buttresses act to spread the weight of the tall walls. Buttresses where also decorative and elaborately, they had many different carving on them. Gothic architecture also had pointed archways. This design also helped to distribute the weight of the stone walls. Another design was the vaulted ceilings. This allowed ceilings to be taller than before and to show height, grandeur, and elegance. The vaulted ceiling used the pointed archway technology. Gothic architecture had many windows that allowed light to come in. Using the new building techniques, it emphasized light, bright windows and airy interiors, transforming castles and churches into more pleasant and majestic environment.
