Henderikus Stam, a psychology professor at the University of Calgary, has studied the effectiveness of hypnosis in different scenarios. His more rewarding work has been with cancer patients, offering them hypnosis to reduce the effects of chemotherapy. According to Stam, young woman who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, meditated often, so hypnosis came easily for her. He noticed that through hypnosis, the great amount of pain she suffered from lessened and seemed to help. Stam also stated that Hypnosis fit well for many patients, however a small percentage of patients who underwent hypnosis were unable to gain any benefits from the technique and that it all depended on the patient’s level of imagination. Researchers are finding ways to harness the power of hypnosis for other medical and clinical procedures, such as dentistry and pain control with child cancer treatments.
