Implementing VLAN in hospitals comes with huge responsibilities. Designing wireless network for hospitals is completely different than that of office buildings. Having wireless networks in a hospitals can be expensive. Due to the nature of the business, this wireless network becomes a primary network for the doctors and nurses, Radio frequency identification (RFID) will be an integral part of the operation. This network shall be able to transport the electronic health records securely (EHR’s) to and from mobile work stations.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act passed by the congress in 1996 also known as HIPPA. This gives patient rights over their health information. Every healthcare organization must follow guidelines laid by HIPPA. The most recent version of HIPAA used in the healthcare industry is 5010. This helps in protecting the Patient Health Information (PHI), medical health records and conduct certain health care information transactions electronically. Companies must have their systems secured with the required firewalls to secure the patient information. When one refers to HIPAA compliance, HIPAA title II is what they mean. Title II includes the following the requirements to be HIPAA compliant:
• National Provider Identifier (NPI). Healthcare entity, that includes individuals, employers, healthcare plans and providers, must have a unique 10 digit number which is the national provider identifier NPI.
• Transactions and Code Sets: Healthcare organizations should be following a standard rule for electronic data interchange (EDI) to submit and process insurance claims. Claim submitted electronically must be encrypted in the X12 format given by the ANSCI standard.
• HIPAA Privacy Rule. This rule establishes national standards for protecting patient health information.
• HIPAA Security Rule. This rule sets the security standards for protecting the Electronic Patient Health Information (PHI).
• HIPAA Enforcement Rule. This rule sets guidelines for investigating HIPAA compliance
