Slavery has existed nearly since antiquity, due in large part to some groups of people having more power than others, which is a dominance issue, rather than a racial one. Slavery, while a true crime against humanity, cannot be attributed to one group alone as a scapegoat because a great deal of slavery, including the African warlords’ enslaving of other African tribal members, already existed.Two of the biggest examples of slavery in colonial history are the enslaving the native people, including the Native Americans, and later, the Americas’ enslaving of Africans. The Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro led his forces to Peru in 1532 and defeated the Incan empire. Soon thereafter, the Encomienda System was established, in which the Spanish conquerors forced the natives to work for them as slaves. In the 1530’s, the Portuguese settle in Brazil and began to grow sugar cane. The conquests by the Spanish in America bring them great wealth, but unrest develops as Catholic priests feel that the enslaving of the native populace is wrong, and in 1542 the Encomienda System is abolished.
