Although animal testing is cruel and unfair to the animals, there have been a couple of good things that have come out of animal testing. “The major pro for animal testing is that it aids researchers in finding drugs and treatments to improve health and medicine. Many medical treatments have been made possible by animal testing, including cancer and HIV drugs, insulin, antibiotics, vaccines and many more” (“Using Animals for Testing”). Animal testing has allowed scientists to find cures to diseases and to create new medicines. Over the years animal testing has saved millions of lives, but it has also killed millions of innocent animals. However, animal testing has also helped many different kinds of animals. “If vaccines were not tested on animals, millions of animals would have died from rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, tetanus, and anthrax” (“Animal Testing-ProCon”). Scientists have discovered many vaccines for animals through animal testing. They have also been able to prevent endangered species from going extinct. Although animal testing has proved to be a good thing, it is still an inhumane way to solve our …show more content…
“These modern methods include sophisticated tests using human cells and tissues, advanced computer-modeling techniques, and studies with human volunteers” (“Alternatives to Animal Testing”). Scientists began doing these tests because they were faster and they costed less money. The first kind of test is a cell culture test which is where scientists are able to grow human organs. “Human cells have been used to create innovative little devices called ‘organs-on-chips’. These can be used instead of animals to study biological and disease processes, as well as drug metabolism” (“Cruelty Free International”). These devices can accurately represent a human lung, kidney, and gut. Cell cultures have helped scientists have a better understanding of cancer, sepsis, and kidney disease. The second kind of test is called a vitro test which is the testing of human tissue. “In the lab, researchers culture cells or tissues obtained from human volunteers, surgical operations, biopsies, and post-mortem specimens and use them for in vitro studies” (“In Research”). Scientists are able to use human tissue that has been donated from different surgeries and study human biology and diseases. Scientific studies have shown that these alternative tests are not only more accurate, but more humane for animals. “Alternative scientific tests are often more reliable than animal tests” (“In Testing”).
