Are Too Many People Going to College? Charles Murray’s article “Are Too Many People Are Going to College?” explains a large point in the life of young Americans. He discuss some needs of our education system, and stated that it needs great improvement.…
Mark Edmundson, who is a professor of English at the University of Virginia and has published many books, wrote “Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here?” as an advice piece to students just entering college. He lets students know that it is a great accomplishment that they have made it to college, but their job is far from done. They have a lot of forces against them built in the college system that will try and keep them from getting a true education.…
Do I really need to go to college? That is the question many students ponder coming out of high school. In the essay, “Is College for Everyone”, Pharinet challenges the idea that perhaps college is only for a selected few. Whether you go to college because you genuinely want to, or because you want to appease your parents, college might not benefit you the way you think it does. Though Pharinet uses logical reasoning to support her claim such as the use of logos, ethos, pathos, and rhetorical questions, her argument is weaken because of her lack of credibility, failure to support her ideas, and bias opinions.…
In a place where media is as mainstream as reading, is there a decline of intelligence? Is there even plausible proof to deterioration of American intelligence? Mark Edmundson, author of “Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here,” and William Chace, author of “A Question of Honor,” both give their reasoning to this decay of intelligence. Both Edmundson and Chace examine the ways in which colleges and universities play a key role in the problem of “anti-intellectualism” in America. Mark Edmundson informs his readers of his beliefs that college is only the beginning.…
In both “Stop Scaring Students,” by Devorah Lieberman and “College is a Waste of Time and Money,” by Caroline Bird the value of a college education is discussed. The need for dedication in both money and studies required for a college education could be a real set-back for some students; therefore, potential college students should acknowledge both the negative and positive qualities of a four year education. Bird and Lieberman have two differing opinions of the value of a college education, which should help future college students on a path that would be better for their future In “Stop Scaring Students,” Devorah Lieberman seeks to refocus the sights of potential college students and reassure the importance of a college degree in pursuing…
In Charles Murray’s “Too Many People Are Going to College” the author presents an argument that uses statistics and logic to state that some people simply do not need to go to college. All throughout high school, students are told by their guidance counselors and teachers that they should be going to college. Charles Murray states that college could even be detrimental for those who do not need it, but are pressured into it. Throughout the essay the author describes the advantages and disadvantages of going to college and receiving the bachelor’s degree associated with it. While going to college and getting a degree is often "seen as the open sesame to a good job", Charles Murray shows that might not be the case (Murray 345).…
Does Coming to College Mean Becoming Someone New? Whether one is just getting out of high school or going back to school, entering the college community is a foreign experience that brings forth a lot of questions on what it will be like. All students attending college for the first time have hopes of getting an education and a degree in the desired field of study.…
Keith M. Parsons, a philosopher, historian and author at the University of Houston-Clear Lake is teaching incoming college freshman in their late teens for his first time. He describes the challenges higher education professors are facing from new millennial generations who have distant priorities about college. Professor Parsons indicates they do not know how to behave because they are accustom to not working hard. Does Parsons have a particular type of favorite student? Consequently, their output is low from habits of “passive” learning.…
Approximately 65,000 undocumented students graduate from U.S. high schools each year. The controversial topic emerged of whether or not children of illegal immigrants should be allowed to receive an education. Obama passed the DREAM Act and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which allowed undocumented youths to work and study in the United States for a certain number of years. In 2017, Trump declared he would end this program. Restricting a child’s education is unconstitutional.…
Is College Worth It? There are many reasons why a person may attend college. Some go for the opportunity to get employment; that through their hard work and money spent, they will end up in a high-paying field that will help repay their debts. In a different group, there are those who go to obtain a higher level knowledge, to better understand the world they live in and learn how to communicate with people that they would normally never would.…
In high school, one is taught that once you step out into the Real World, everything changes relatively quick, which so far I have found to be true. All of the once popular people now come crawling back to the ones they used to prey upon because they were smart. The value of a dollar to a person in university is extremely higher than that of a high-schooler, and the fact that most professors in university don 't specifically teach in class. Thus, the all around responsibility put on a person in post secondary education is ridiculously high in comparison to that in high school.…
College Is Not the Key to Success In College is a Waste of Time and Money by Caroline Bird she explains how college was a good place for a few kids that were drawn to their academic work, but now it is stupid for kids to go to college when all they are doing is wasting their time and money. Bird is right, the only reason they go to college is to make their parents happy not for the education part. She explains that young adults in college are sad, mostly because they are just thrown into the real world without knowing what is going to happen next. They do not know what is best for them so they think going to college will help them get a better job in the long run. Most teachers, engineers, and even nurses said they do not use what they…
The biggest problem college students are facing today is the agonizing debt that comes along with their higher education. This issue could be addressed in multiple ways. One way is rallying together and fighting colleges that continually increase the price of tuition; even if you have been enrolled you are not grandfathered in in anyway and are subjected to pay. Taking a class outside your major is one thing, being subjected to take classes that offer no additional or in some cases educational benefits is utterly malarkey. I have personally taken a class where the final thesis paper was a research paper on how to write a research paper; the class was mandatory and only gave me one…
Unlike American students, Korean students focus on education the most during the high school years. When most high school students enter into universities, once they attain their rights in adulthood, they focus more to enjoy their freedom. Most students drink alcohol to express their freedom and it became part of the Korean universities’ culture. Due to this reason, alcohol was necessary for most of the school events such as school field trips and explorations. But I wondered why students expressed their freedom through alcohol.…
Even though it has been proven that students who study more will have a greater income, the average full-time college student is devoting less than the recommend study time than students in past generations. The changes in technology and university student populations have been suggested factors in causing the decline in study time. Many suspected that the decline in study time is due to the increase in technological advances. However, the decline in study time started before the advance in technology. The general four-year university population change and time has effected student’s study time.…
