As taking into mind all the factors of events in The Crucible, the origin of all “problems” have been by word of the mouth, otherwise known as gossip. In the beginning Abigail Williams and Reverend Parris are together when Abigail says, “… But they’re speaking of witchcraft...” (Miller 10). The town’s residents have created a gossip amidst themselves subsequently creating hysteria. Hysteria then prompts the residents to act carelessly convicting many of the crime witchcraft. Likewise, in a more modern event in history can similar actions be witnessed.

The job being to distribute information to the masses, the intent, however, is what makes simple gossip be much stronger. In the situation of The Crucible and the McCarthyism era that intent was negative which promoted negative actions. For most, if not all, topics people have a preconceived notion of what’s right and wrong, it is a gossip's job to support or alter the idea of others. In conclusion gossip’s main role is to support or start of a series, as it did so in both The Crucible and during the McCarthyism
