Obese Children, Characteristics, and Vulnerability
The specific population under consideration in this paper are those individuals who are newborns to twelve years old living in the United States and who are obese. Erik Erickson, the influential lifespan development psychologist, described ways in which if the stages of early life are not successfully completed, by positively interacting with others and their environment, then children will likely grow up to not trust others, be self-initiative lacking, or feel inferior to others if proper intervention is not implemented. Short term decreases in weight is possible for obese children, however, long term results with dietary adjustment and exercise regiments remain disputable, which is why primary prevention is the preferred way to treat childhood obesity (Matson & Fallon, 2012). Although identifying the way to prevent and treat childhood obesity is complex it should be an effort that caretakers and society agree to work on together. In the meantime, registered nurses can do their part to educate their patients about how to prevent and treat childhood
