Throughout the story and tries to straddle the difference between her Chinese culture, making her family happy and her crush Todd. As part of her culture and miss feed her elderly grandmother because she is higher in the family hierarchy. And says “ I feel disgusted” and “I would die if Todd new”(2). Anne says she feels disgusted I would “die” if Todd knew because if Todd knew because she knew he wouldn't understand that is part of part of her culture. Anne starts to reconnect with her roots when she is remembering the past time she spent with her grandma in Chinatown. Well in Chinatown and remembers it as a busy place and loud place she says “I couldn't understand why it was so loud”(2). This shows that Anne was being brought closer to her roots and exposed to her culture through her grandmother. She also experiences problems with her parents when Todd is at her house. This jeopardizes the connection she feels to her culture and roots. In the fight with her parents anne says “I slapped him back”. In that that moment she resents her family, culture and roots for causing her pain. After Anne has had some time to herself she goes and sits with her grandmother.
