Freud’s structure of the mind.
The id.
This part of the mind that Freud explains as the Id refers to the unconscious part of the mind that seeks to find pleasure. Freud believes that because of the Id people act out in certain ways. If the Id is not in par with the ego and super ego it can effect behaviour. As the Id is the part of the mind that holds all basic drives in order to satisfy any needs, the Id is also explained as being impulsive. The Id does not take into consideration any consequences that may occur in reality because of a certain behaviour. The superego takes into consideration the morals of society. The superego helps the mind in stopping any impulses that are not morally correct and is looked down upon by society. The Superego has the ability to know the difference between right and wrong. Freud explained that the superego helps people to distinguish what’s right and wrong and that without the superego people would act out in aggression or immorally because the mind would not be able to tell the difference between right and wrong. The Superego is seen as the conscious part of the mind unlike the Id and Ego which is seen as the Unconscious part of the mind. The Superego can over drive the urges that come from the Id, there are two parts of the Superego, the ideal self and the conscious, this is where morally accepted perceptions are kept as well as the images people have of how they should be and how they should act. Strengths and weaknesses of these theories.
Freud’s theory on psychoanalytic had both strengths and weaknesses, his strengths were how he emphasised the effects of childhood experiences has on the development of one’s personality, his theory of childhood and the stages helped other theorists in developing other theories on personality while using what Freud found as the basis, another strength was was the idea that psychological disturbances came from childhood trauma.
The weaknesses of Freud’s theory and what he was criticised a lot for was that his theory was not scientifically proven. Freud was also criticised for using a method that was seen as being bias as well as Freud not taking people’s cultural backgrounds into consideration as well biological factors. Another weakness of Freud’s theory was that of focuses to much on sexual issues, and not taking other factors such as interpersonal relationships and social factors.(Siegried,2014)
The strengths of Jung’s analytic theory was that it was seen as a very encompassing theory. The analytic theory was also seen as ones that added a great deal to the explanation of human behaviour which also helped is discovering other theories.
