Flores decides to ask the school’s Early Intervention Program (EIP) team for assistance with Jose. She is certain that further assistance is needed to help Jose with his deficiency. The EIP team is comprised of the school counselor, the school’s assistant principal, librarian and remedial teachers. The EIP team starts to collect and gather as much information as possible to determine what is causing Jose not to advance in the subject at the same level as his fellow classmates. The EIP team decides to collect test data from Ms. Flores to analyze results of tests given to Jose. They gather standardized test results not only for Jose, but for the rest of the class. They also collect standardized test results from Jose’s previous years going as far back as the first grade. They also decide to interview Ms. Flores to get more information about Jose and what she observes aside from his avoidance of reading. The EIP team is interested in other behaviors that Jose displays while in class. The EIP team also decided to interview the parents of Jose to obtain information about his home activities. They understand the fact that Jose’s parents only speak Spanish and ask another teacher who speaks Spanish for assistance. The EIP team wants to rule out any possible family problem that might be impacting Jose. The EIP team invited Jose’s parents to the school to conduct an interview and the parents shared intimate information about what goes on in the household. Jose’s parents revealed that Jose did not show any problems at home and that there were no serious family problems that could be affecting Jose. The parents also stated that Jose acted like a normal 8 year old boy that enjoyed playing with friends outside and had no complaints about his behavior aside from norm of how and 8 year old boy acts. Jose’s parents were asked if he read any books while he was home and they replied no. Another piece of information that the parents shared was that Jose did not like to watch television, which they found a bit strange since their daughter watched a lot of television and figured that all kids were that way. In fact, they went as far as asking other family member is their sons and daughters watched a lot of television and they found that yes, other children do watch a lot of television. The team found it a bit odd and just recorded the information.
After that information was collected, Jose was referred by the nurse to a local doctor to have a complete physical done on him. The doctor performed various tests to include a hearing, vision and agility test. Other tests were conducted and results were given to Jose’s parents as well as the school nurse.
