I think it is crucial. I work with students with special needs. Their needs may vary from physical limitations to high function autism to Emotional Disturbance. For the most of the time, class time is not enough or convenient at all to support their interests and needs. That is why I also offer a lunchtime learning. If it is some sort of punishment, I don't call it detention, I say come and see me at lunchtime, so we can talk or so. Often they don't want to. However, it is important for them to know that you don't see them only as a student but you also see them form a different side of them. They define themselves by their interests, and it is important for them to see that you value what drives their day too. Students see their interests as who they are, especially students with ED or other extreme needs.

Like today, with the essay on Kafka's "Metamorphoses," I had to come up with four options. The fourth option was for a student with autism: all he needed was to answer five questions I prepared for him. Once he answers these questions, he would be ready for an essay. I think safety, essentially, comes in the feeling protected; it comes in the feeling of people are ready to meet me where I am but that also people are willing to challenge me a little bit. I think we will meet our student's needs by just being aware of what they need, and what they expect from us.
