The process itself consists of three steps, exposure, attention, and interpretation. Exposure occurs when sensory stimuli come into contact with our sensory receptors. Upon entering Lord and Taylor, exposure occurred when I saw the numerous posters outside the store claiming the sale, as well as, when I heard the DJ playing music, and saw the staff of Lord and Taylor employees with flyers and credit card applications. The second step, attention, determines the amount of time or energy exerted into specific stimuli. For instance, the music was recognized instantly upon arrival, and was not heavily dissected after the initial exposure. However, the advertisements around the store stating the sales and indicating the sales racks required heavy attention and appreciation. Due to the mass amount of advertisements and deals being stated, I contributed a large amount of attention. The final step is interpretation, where the consumer organizes and assigns meaning to the numerous stimuli in the store. Depending on the stimuli, the interpretation process and time differ. As a consumer, the presence of the DJ was quickly determined to be an indicator that this particular sale is exciting and exclusive. However, it took more time to recognize the meaning and significance of the sales signs, posters, and eager sales associates walking around. However, once I experienced these stimuli, it was clear to me that this sale is full of respectable, affordable deals that Lord and Taylor hopes to engage their consumers in
