She gave me wisdom when I fell short of that standard by counseling and giving her personal experiences, showing me what right looks like as an NCO. She was, and still is, an active listener who takes suggestions from those with who serve alongside her, instilling an even stronger sense of team and family. Finally, she showed me how resiliency and compassion are vital as a Senior NCO. Never give up on Soldiers who are labeled as sub-par, motivate them rather than ignore them. Never give up on your peers, but always lend assistance in any case when your help is needed. Never give up on yourself when you’re at your lowest professionally or personally, do not be afraid to ask for help from your team. I am reminded of a quote from MSG Hauver about the Army, “The Army saved my life. The Army gave me challenges and opportunities to do extraordinary things, like jump out of planes and interact with other cultures. I am grateful for what the Army has done for me. It’s my way of life now”. As an NCO, this quote speaks to me as, how a senior NCO should be fully invested.
The legacy I want to leave upon ending my career in the military service would mirror that of MSG Amy Hauver. Compassion and understanding toward those who need guidance when they have lost their way. Resilience, when subordinates or peers are troubled or need intervention when faced with a significant emotional event. Humbleness and the knowledge that there are limitations and that you cannot do it all by yourself. Lastly, motivation and being able to effectively bring Soldiers together and instill that sense of duty and comradery, so that they are compelled to want the mission to succeed, whatever it may
