The author used Precise vocabulary such as new words and meanings (Tunnell, 2016, p.19) to the younger audience by describing different meanings of emotions to security items such as blankets. She was making her point come across with such sentences as “When I was at home, I wrapped myself in a blanket of my own words and sounds. I called it my old blanket” (Kobald, 2014). She is saying to her audience that her home, is her own environment that she felt comfort. The character knew she can speak her language and sound out her sounds and she can also feel safe in this place. Cartwheel met a young girl, but didn’t understand her, it was clear in this sentence “The girl came up to us and said something. Her words were strange. It was like being back under the cold waterfall” (Kobald, 2014). Music in language became stronger towards the end of the book, Cartwheel, started playing with the girl and started opening up to her emotions “she took me to the swings, I got on and she pushed me higher and higher, I wanted to laugh, I wanted to tell her how glad I was that we were friends” (Kobald, 2014).
