In Greek mythology, Achilles was a great warrior who did many great deeds. He was extremely strong and his enemies eventually came to fear the very mention of his name. Although strong, Achilles had a massive weakness that eventually proved fatal once it was exploited. In modern times, we now refer to a great weakness amidst great strength as an "Achilles Heel". The Food and Drug Administration oversees the nation 's food supply and what regulations need to be taken to ensure the safety of the consumer; however, with the instances of food borne illnesses seemingly on the rise, we cannot deny that the Food and Drug Administration is doing something wrong, and the American People are suffering because of it. The FDA is the Achilles Heel of the United States, and when the weakness is exploited, no consumer will be able to fully trust the businesses that produce the food we eat. Achilles had a weak spot on the back of his heel, and once the enemy discovered and exploited his weakness, it proved fatal. So, what is the weakness of the FDA? The weakness of the Food and Drug Administration is itself. The FDA is an extremely powerful organization, every pill that is taken, every injection that is received; every food that is produced is reviewed by the FDA. When the FDA refuses to use its own abilities, it suffers due to the public backlash. If we can hope to trust food companies, if we can hope to remain safe when we feed our families, our only hope is that the FDA will wake up and use its abilities to ensure the well-being of the consumer and the food industry as a whole. Let’s just hope they don’t exploit their own weakness and fall on their own
