“To One Persuading a Lady to Marriage” starts out with alliteration in the first line, the words “Heaven” and “here” create an alliteration; this could be to place emphasis on the fact that youth is a magical time, and people shouldn’t waste it by getting married because it is here and now, and it will fade quick (1). This poem has many occurrences of enjambment. Our first occurrence is in the first stanza where it says, “[a]nd what you do aver/ To others courtship may appear”, this enjambment helps the poem flow. Possibly to place focus on the fact that your actions have consequences. What they do may seem like a simple courtship, but to the lady it is sacrilegious.
