Woodcarving is a form of art that is cheap, and easily available. However it won’t last as long as stone and metal due to its defenselessness against water, bugs, and fungi, so it is mainly used for indoor use. They displayed the life of Egyptians. They used clay, wood, metal, ivory and stone for their sculptures. The characteristics of their sculptures are that it’s cubic and frontal. According to the passage, “It nearly always echoes in its form the shape of the stone cube or block from which it was fashioned…” (Ancient Egyptian Art, Painting, Sculpture) Also, the human or animal always faces to the front. You’ll never see a contrapposto Ancient Egyptian sculpture. Their use of symbolism is shown in different ways including the colors. For example, yellow symbolized the sun god and red was for power. Their religious practices included making a sculpture of a dead person because they believed it will take them to the new world. When a pharaoh died, they built his “guards” which would protect him. Artists create abstract forms of art which is the use of colors, shapes, forms, and textures to create a sculpture that doesn’t depict anything. They also, “paid more attention to stylization, form, and contrasting qualities of the surface of the material” (About Sculpture in Western Art). Salvador Dali uses illusions and hallucinations in his sculptures. As one of the best Surrealists of all time, he has inspired many modern day artists. Dali had used symbolism and themes in his artwork. For example, some had the theme of death or love, or some would symbolize religion, or his fetishes. Giacometti also used Surrealism, but then abandoned that. He wanted to represent the human body and show emotion. His sculptures of suffering humans were popular during the world wars. As stated in the text, “His figures represented human beings alone in the world, turned in on themselves and failing to communicate with their fellows, despite their overwhelming desire to reach out.” (Alberto Giacometti Biography, Art, and Analysis of Works). Henry Moore was also artist that influenced modern art. He was a popular British sculptor in the post-War period.
