Persia, a mighty kingdom centred in now what is Iran rose to power in about 550 BCE. For over two whole centuries the kingdom ruled a vast empire, which stretched from the Indus valley (southern Asia, India) to parts of, northern Africa and southern Europe, and even parts of modern day Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania. It all started in 522 BCE when Darius became the king of Persia after the death of Cambyses II. Darius I ruled Persia when the empire was at its largest and most powerful. He tried twice to conquer Greece, the greatest ancient civilisation of all time, re-built and constructed the royal road, also he conquered lands to expand the Persian Empire.
