They watched as the fire swiftly gobbled up everything in its wake, destroying all of the forest around them and turning it to ash. The fire continued to burn voraciously by moving farther into the forest, incinerating everything it touched completely. After it had passed and moved away farther along in the woods, the woods were desolate. Most of the trees were nothing but ashes, and the forest floor had disappeared into the fire. There were no rabbits, no deer, no grasshoppers, no fireflies, and none of anything else which lived in the forest only moments ago. The fire’s purpose may have been to stop them, but in actuality it succeeded in destroying everything else. “Yes I can. I remember on that map it had a body of water shaped like this, and it was directly north of our house. On the map, it was pretty detailed about this lake, showing that it was bowling pin shaped, with the small part facing away from the house. So if we head that way,” Jackson explained, pointing to the larger end of the lake, “we should be able to make it home.”
“Thank goodness Jackson! Now that the sun is rising, we can head home safely and free ourselves from this nightmare!” Julia replied joyfully. Thus, with the fire raging off in the distance, but now just a nightmare of the past, Julia and Jackson trekked back to their house in accordance to Jackson’s memory of the map in their basement. With Jackson’s limp, they were slow-moving, giving them lots of time to ponder what had just occurred. “Jackson, with brutal honesty, I cannot believe what happened last night truly happened,” said Julia with a sense of wonder.
“Me neither. Can you pinch me to make sure I am not dreaming?” Jackson responded as Julia reached over to pinch him. “Ow! You didn’t have to do it that hard!” Jackson yelped.
“Gotta take my chances while I can! But truly, did that just really
