Portrayed in movies, television shows, and even reviews, Anne, known as a constantly optimistic, smiling, innocent teenager. This is in order to make her story sellable. The back of the definitive addition explains that Anne’s diary “has become a world classic and a timeless testament to the human spirit” (Back cover). Throughout her diary, Anne complains continuously about her family and housemates. This is for good reason, as they are without personal areas due to confined space. This is not the ‘timeless testament to the human spirit’ that was intended to be portrayed. In Alvin H. Rosenfeld’s “Anne Frank and The Future of Holocaust Memory”, Rosenfeld explains, “By now readers know these words and can repeat them by heart.
