“Negative reinforcement occurs when a certain stimulus (usually an aversive stimulus) is removed after a particular behavior is exhibited. The likelihood of the particular behavior occurring again in the future is increased because of removing/avoiding the negative consequence” (Collaborative Analysis - Individualized Care). In the passage, Rodney’s sisters and mother use a negative reinforcement method to teach Rodney while he grows up. Rodney’s sisters and mother do not believe Rodney is a smart child, so they do not give Rodney any praise in his childhood, and that is the reason why Rodney stays quiet and does not speak unless other people tell him to speak. Rodney’s sisters and mother also tell Mr. Jones that Rodney is not a smart child, so Mr. Jones should not expect too much from him. When I read this passage, I realize that most Chinese parents use the same teaching method while they raising their children, and I am one of those children. My father never gives me praise about my work, because he has a very high expectation and requirement for me. For example, my father wants me to get into the best university in China, even though I was five points short of that best school’s enrollment, and I could get into other good universities, he would still not satisfied with the result and punishes me. When people use praise in the positive reinforcement teaching method, they help the one who receive the praise becomes confident about the things he or she is doing. If there is no praise after actions, people would doubt themselves and fail on the things they are working on. This passage also makes me realize the different cultures use different reinforcement, I think the positive reinforcement should be noticed by more
