Experimenting on animals, with or against? Since many years, animals have always been one of the reasons for the survival of many human beings. They are used for experimental and medical research for finding new drugs and treatments and for the general advancement of health and medicine. There has been a controversy between people about the pros and cons to the practice of animal testing and whether it is helpful or it is just wasting the animal lives and there could be alternatives. First of all, the scientific community and many other people support the use of animals because it helped in the discovery of new drugs and treatments to various diseases and lead to the improvement …show more content…
Mice and humans are 98% genetically similar while Chimpanzees do share 99% of their DNA with humans. All mammals including humans have similar organs and systems because they all are descending from similar ancestors. There is also no any alternative that can be used to test on a living organism except animals. If sometimes tissue cultures or computer models are used, blindness and high blood pressure are some of the conditions were these techniques won’t be accurate and reliable. Organs such as brain are very difficult to be simulate even with the use of supercomputers. From this point of view, scientists should be provided with detailed information and so they must be allowed to use animal as experimenting models (Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial …show more content…
During animal testing, many animals are killed after experimenting on them and the others remain alive with injuries and in captivity. 95% of the animals tested are not protected by Animal Welfare Act including mice, fish and birds and they are all suffering abuse and mistreatment. Even with the protection provided by the Animal Welfare Act, some horrific cases of animal abuse in the laboratories wasn’t prevented. Some people also find it immoral to test and experiment on animals for the human benefit saying that animals have feelings and do suffer like humans which makes it unfair to experiment on them what cannot be experimented on humans only because they do not have the ability to express their feelings. However, animal rights supporters only oppose scientists but not the farmers who kill animals daily for food but call the scientists cruel for killing animals for the advancement of medical field although, 99% of animals killed are by farmers while only 1% are by scientists (Ian, Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?). The use of animals in experimental research will always remain a controversial issue and the people will always divide into two opinions either with for the great benefit in the medical field that comes from the animal testing or against for the ethical problems and the animal rights.
