The term “Euthanasia” comes from the Greek word “εὐθανασία”, meaning “good death.” According to Priests for life, euthanasia means to remove someone of their suffering by death. Euthanasia has two parts, voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia is when the patient wants to end their own life. Involuntary euthanasia is when someone else kills the patient even though they want to live. Within those two parts there are two exact ways that a patient dies. The first is active euthanasia which is where the patient takes their own life and then there is passive euthanasia where someone else withholds something necessary for the patient’s survival, which then kills the patient. According to Patient’s Rights Council one of five cases of euthanasia has problems or complications. This is due to the fact that many doctors have not had any courses in pain management and are unaware of what to do about it. There are many different treatments a dying person may receive, and all of those treatments go under two types, ordinary and extraordinary. Ordinary treatments are necessary for all patients, they benefit the patient, but they do not burden the patient. Some examples of ordinary treatments include a flu shot to prevent getting the flu, or a low risk surgery to save a patient from harm. Extraordinary treatments are optional for the patient to take or not, and they burden the patient. Life support, ventilators, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation are all examples of extraordinary treatments. The Patient’s Rights Council also stated the therapeutic dose of euthanizing injections are 100-200mg, but doctors prescribe 9,000-10,000mg, which is way more than the needed dose. Euthanasia should be legalized and professionals should be trained in how to correctly euthanize a patient.
