Issue: Freedom of Speech at School
Background: Three kids walked up there school with a black armband. Then school office told them to take it off they refused to so now they started to start a thig over freedom of speech. The Supreme Court sided with the kids of having freedom of speech and can where as they please (Not all school don't get to do this). It said First Amendment guarantees must be balanced against a school’s need to keep order: As long as an act of expression doesn’t disrupt class work or school activities or invade the rights of others, its acceptable.

Principal questioned her and asked to see her purse. There was a pack of cigarettes , rolling papers, and some marijuana. Her case got taken to trial and was found guilty for possession of marijuana and place on probation. She said it was against the four amendment but the school is allowed to search in your bags for safety reasons.

Issue: School Discipline
Background: 14 year old was acting up in in class and got sent to the principal office. Principal decided to give him five swats with the paddle, the boy refused the punishment because he didnt do nothing wrong. So he got held down and then got 20 swats by the principal. The boy suffered bruises and kept out of school for ten days had to have medical attention. The boy and his mother sued the principle and other school official. That it was against the eighth amendment cruel and unusual punishment. The government said “ the eighth amendment only goes from the government hands not school childrens.
Bottom Line: Teachers can use corporal punishment
