In 1974, forced sterilization became against the law. In today’s society, the patient must give her or her consent before a medical procedure. If the patient is unable to give his or her consent, then a family member or a trusted friend will determine the decision. In my opinion, there is not anyone that should not be able to reproduce. If someone commits a horrendous action, then certainly that person should face the consequences but they should not be forcefully sterilized. On the other hand, some people are born with a disorder that could be considered a nuisance to some. Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis is explained as “a procedure used prior to implantation to help identify genetic defects within embryos. This serves to prevent certain genetic diseases or disorders from being passed on to the child” (American Pregnancy Association). This is a form of Eugenics because it allows the modification of embryos in order to forbid unwanted disorders. This type of Eugenics should only be used with the parent’s consent for preventing deadly disorders. Not only should this be used to prevent deadly disorders, but also disorders that would make ones way of life difficult. Additionally, Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis can be used for “genetic propensities for intelligence, height, athletic or musical ability, or other traits” (Resnik). From my perspective, Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis should only be used for the prevention of disorders, not for parents to be able to select what their child will actually look like.
