Awareness of identity is important in your personal life to guide expectation about your own and others social roles. It also helps to give a sense of belonging. Some situations in which this awareness would be beneficial is during study and practice of intercultural communication, how you stand on religion, and how you view politics.

My racial identity (white) I was born into. My ethnic identity was gained from my parents and how they raised me. My gender identity is female, because I was born a female.
4. What is ethnocentrism? Give an example of ethnocentrism. How can you avoid ethnocentrism? Be specific.
Ethnocentrism is the belief in righteousness in one’s own culture. An example of ethnocentrism is Asians thinking they are better than American’s. You can avoid ethnocentrism by deterring from dogmatism and by being open to others ideas.
5. What are the causes of prejudice? Give examples of each.
Causes of prejudice are different personalities, the social learning theory, SES, societal sources, social identity, and scapegoating.
Examples of each:
Different personalities- conformists.
The social learning theory- A prejudiced household raised a child to also be prejudiced as an adult.
SES- A lower income family has negative views toward out-groups.
Societal sources- A hospital committee (in America) has a board of professionals that are all males except for one female physician. The female’s ideas are often not heard and the power lies in the hands of the male
