In the daily routine that distracts the public from the organizations that make their world go round, there is a system that is being implemented behind the scenes. These organizations are corporations that have become dominant in our society. Some, like Stanley A. Deetz, would argue that the corporations have become the dominant institution (1992). In the bookselling world, there are two major players in the United States, Amazon and Barnes & Nobles. There have been many a days where I would spend my time at my nearby bookstore and browse their selections. When I worked at the university bookstore, I felt comfortable and confident in my performance because of the leadership and system implemented. No matter if someone has worked at a bookstore or not, they have come across a bookstore for whatever reason. In addition to working at the Barnes & Noble College branch, I often find myself shopping at my local bookstore. The Post-Fordist organization is a dominant system of economic production, consumption and associated socio-economic phenomena that is employed by many 20th century businesses. Barnes & Nobles is primarily knowledge work as opposed to manual labor work. Although many times while I worked at the bookstore I have been asked to handle and stock many textbooks onto the shelves I never found it to be manual labor. I was normally asked to work on the computer to handle online orders or handle the register. The same could be said for the employees at the retail bookstores. Most of the time they would be working the register or customer service. Or if the bookstore had the resources, they would have workers at the cafe to establish a more relaxed ambiance to their brand.
With Barnes & Noble being a niche market, they would mainly cater to every variety of books available.
