Becoming More Globally Minded Through Service
In order to provide students with successful advancement opportunities past secondary education, educators must first provide them with service opportunities focused on global mindedness during the high school years. Attitudes towards others start in the classroom; it is here that students develop a sense of self and others. The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement, compiled an investigative report on student volunteer opportunities in 2007. A comparison between schools showed students were 22-percent more likely to improve their History, Math, Reading, and Science scores, and more likely to graduate from college when required to participate in community service (civicyouth.org). Volunteering at a global level helps students: develop knowledge of other cultures, focus on a higher level other than just self, prepare for real-world situations, encounter challenges and devise solutions, gain new perspectives, obtain independence and self-confidence, and learn, which in turn helps them …show more content…
The International Baccalaureate was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, which uses British-English for grammar; thus programme is spelled in this manner, versus the American-English version, spelled as program.
2. Students participating in the Middle Years Programme at Rampart High School have the option to participate in IB curriculum, Service as Action, and Personal Project. Students may elect to participate in all three components, or a combination. Students earn a line on their final transcript for each component participated in.
