Copying Beethoven is a movie, which takes place in 1824. It is a romantic period drama. Beethoven is a legendary musician, and he is stone deaf. In last days of his life, he gets busy in preparing for his latest symphony. Beethoven is desperate to publish his “Ninth Symphony”. Beethoven’s publisher is Schlemmer, who is dying of cancer. Beethoven is in need to complete his symphony. So, Schlemmer sends the student Anna Holtz as copyist to complete Beethoven’s score. Anna Holtz is a Viennese music student. She is an aspiring composer and extremely talented. Anna Holtz readily accepts the job to transcribe Beethoven’s messy musical notations. Anna Holtz was given the warning that the composer was rude and arrogant, even after that Anna accepts the job. The composer and the copyist work together in the dark apartment. Beethoven composes and Anna copies in the apartment where rats are all over the place and overflowing chamber pots. Each scene in the film helps us to better understand the story. I have learned the importance of music in the 18th century. This movie best describes everything about the music. I really liked how Anna Holtz was excellent in composing and copying music, she was focused on her work. In one of the scenes from the movie: she corrects Beethoven’s musical notes, which shows her interest and love for music. There is a dialogue in the movie said by Beethoven: “Music is the language of god and we musicians can be as close to God as a man can be.” I found this dialogue emotionally touching and real. Although Beethoven sees himself on a spiritual mission to share God's language with the world, he has not progressed very far in terms of treating people with loving respect.
