Elections are neither free nor fair as Lukashenka has won year after year, even after much controversy. These elections have been deemed unfair by other nations for the restrictions on campaigning by opposition candidates, censorship of the media, coercion of voters, ballot stuffing and non-transparent counting of votes. Even the opposing candidates who had lost were jailed if they believed the election results were changed. With these unfair advantages playing in his favor it is nearly impossible to take Lukashenka out of power through elections. Other factors playing into the government control is that the internet is available but monitored and limited. Any opposition is removed and there is little freedom of expression allowed on the internet. Opposing political parties websites are often hacked and altered, believed by many to be hacked by the state. Barrack Obama will fully support the spread of democracy to foreign countries. He has done so in the past by promoting foreign organizations who support and try to spread democracy. The U.S. is a member of NATO and the UN which have promoted civil society which includes being open to the idea of democracy. (Lagon) Vladimir Putin, the leader of Russia, both supports and opposes the spread of democracy. Russia can be considered a simple democracy but they’re similar to Belarus in the fact that they are basically autocratic. Because of Russia’s stance on democracy they will most likely make no strides to alter this problem as they are having trouble handling it
