As a Soviet leader he was different from past leaders. For one, he was younger than any past Soviet Leader when he came to power. Not only that, but as reforms were different as well. His policies and reforms focus on openness and democratisation of the Soviet Union with a more open market. This was different from Stalin who has been the leader of the Soviet Union during the start of the Cold War because the Stalin’s policies exercise control and took away large amounts of freedom of speech. Another leader that compared to Gorbachev was Nikita Gorbachev. Even though he was different from Stalin in that he wanted peaceful coexistence with the U.S. and capitalist states, he did not plan on creating an open market or democratisation. With democratization brought by Perestroika, East Germany was about to discuss with West Germany and plan for unification without much interruption from the Soviet Union.
