The authors believe that families need to promote a healthy lifestyle by modeling it and talking to their children about media’s skewed messages. The authors reviewed texts by other people, looked at the changes of body type throughout history, and how these changes affected people’s idea of their own self. This article is a mix of sociology and history disciplines. Sociology is important to my wicked problem in this article because of the socialization of children and teens through media, and what type of consumption is affecting their ideas of an ideal body type. Sociology deals with society effects and psychology looks at more personal effects. Sociology looks at how the environment around a person can have an influence on their mental health, but psychology traces how these influences affect the person individuals and why one person may develop a eating disorder while another teen is watching the same television show. Combining these two disciplines would not be difficult, and it would be incomplete without one another. With just sociology, the only information provided would be environment factors that may influence a person, but it’s not necessarily a causation. Psychology completes the causation by looking at an individual’s history and personal influences.
