James is a man in his late 60s with a lot of life in him. He is a sweetheart and he definitely still shows his love for his wife. A nice gesture he did in front of my eyes was getting the chair for Norma and seating her down. James is a humorous and caring human being. His family did not have much, similar to John's family. His family was low-income as James described it, "we were poor, every three dollars that Mr. Roger (his fathers) made he would spend on his children". James was telling me about how his family cooking my methods used to be back then. His family used wood and the coal to cook. This brought me back to my memories of my childhood when my grandmother would host the big feast every September, in which family members and friends would come to the backyard and season and cook a massive amounts of food with enormous pots, strong sticks, wood and huge heavy stones. I always used to stay near the pig being roasted because it was so fascinating to me and it smelled amazing! Then, James brought me back to the present. He was then talking about how his family would only have ice cream once a month as a reward. A dish that was frequently served in his household was Potato soup. James then went on and on how his family was so united during that time period and how that unity no longer exist. He believes that strong family bonds have been broken overtime. Being brought up into a poor household has a huge impact on our health. For example, Norma and her husband James. Norma is a wealthy and educated woman and therefore, she has no health issues. Her parents were able to live until their late nineties. In contrast to Norma, James was not educated on how his eating habits would impact his health later on in life. Norma changed his life completely. In this paper I have reflected on the different diets of John, Robyn, James, Norma and Susan. Talking to these folks have changed the way I select my foods. Remember where one comes from will influence one’s health therefore, make good choices and educate oneself and
