During the shutter island costume plays a big part in the actual look of the film and characters, which helps build more knowledge towards what type of person the character is and also their past. The scene I will be looking at is the flashback seven in which Teddy sees his wife inside their old apartment building. This building represents a place that Andrew was happy, but his imaginations story of how his wife died. Andrew/Teddy believes that a patient at Shutter Island named Andrew Laeddis has set their apartment on fire with his wife inside. The scene shows his wife standing looking out the window at nothing waiting for Teddy to enter the room. Teddy walks towards her as she complains through dialog about how Teddy is never sober anymore, meanwhile holding alcohol that he had previously drunk. I chose this scene because the costume on his wife allows us to see what has happened in the past and how the director chose to show us small hints in towards the ending of the movie. Teddy’s wife wear a colourful and flowery dress which follows down to the ground. The colours used on the dress are an overall yellow with green leaves and red flowers amongst each other. The dress is shown many times throughout the movie to resemble his guild and trauma from his past but I feel as though this scene shows us more towards her character and what Teddy is going through. The scene begins to finish as Teddy, from behind, grabs a hold of …show more content…
Both the movies are structured very well and both Martin Scorsese and Eric Bress, J. Mackye Gruber did very well at choosing the main characters Teddy and Evan’s as they both can relate to each other in different ways. The techniques I used, such as costume is very alike with both films. Both scenes I had chosen were as in a relationship, say married with Teddy and Evan’s ex-girlfriend, therefore it shows the relationships linking to the characters. As using costume, it shows Teddy’s wife, with a colorful lovely dress on, yet the dress also symbolizes Teddy’s trauma through the flashback as the dress represents his children’s deaths. This is shown through the wetness of the dress. With butterfly effect this represents the trauma of Evan and Kayleigh’s childhood and how it can affect the present. This is shown through the costume of how she now dresses in the scene I have talked about. Linking these two films together went very well as they are so much alike but still very different in their own ways. Through mystery and trauma bring together the films and the main characters and allow me to product a piece linking them both
