Water is our life and if the drought happens, it is threatening to our water supply. Since California is facing the serious risk of drought, it will significantly affect the sustainability of water supplies to decrease because of the dry and hot weather that make our environment become drier. The amount of available water supply and its quality will also decrease, and it will affect the people 's health, water supply, and the majority of the food supply. Groundwater is the most important water resource during the drought because groundwater can be used as an alternative supplementary source of water when regular surface water decrease. Moreover, when groundwater reduces due to a severe drought, it may decrease in water level and flows into lakes, streams, other water bodies (Drought in California). Decreased groundwater flow to surface waters can affect aquatic ecosystems that rely on a continuous supply of groundwater to sustain aquatic habitats and stream flow (Groundwater and Drought). Thus, Drought can lead to difficult decisions regarding distribution of water and result in firm water usage …show more content…
Agricultural jobs and its revenue have decreased so much in the last four years, especially in the Central Valley region. Farms consume about 80 percent of the state 's water supply, and use it to grow half of the fruits and vegetables that are produced in the United States. Almonds and alfalfa (cattle feed) use more than 15 percent of the state 's water. An estimate about 564,000 acres will be idled this year; farm revenue loss is forecast at $1.8 billion. In addition, the forecast anticipates 8,550 fewer farm jobs because of the drought (Wee, Heesun).
