Canada, along with the United States, is also a member of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). NORAD is the bilateral agreement between the United States and Canada that supports the early warning, defense, and protection of the North American continent from all aerospace threats. NORAD was created in September, 1957, and is headquartered in Colorado Springs Colorado. NORAD has an ongoing air defense mission. Operation Noble Eagle is the ongoing air defense mission. This operation is continually refined to meet the challenges of a changing world. Operation Noble Eagle closely follows the NORAD mission statement. NORAD’s mission statement is essentially the defense and safeguard of the airspace surrounding North America. They will also use and collaborate with all available military and law enforcement agencies. NORAD is broken down into three regions; the Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR), the Canadian NORAD Region (CANR), and the Continental United States NORAD Region (CONR). Both the United States and Canada provide National Guard and active duty forces, located at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, that detect, validate, and warn of any aircraft or missile threat in the assigned area of operation of ANR. The population that inhabits the country have varying background and cultures. There are more than 100 different languages spoken, with two official languages, English and French, which are defined by the Canadian government. The backgrounds that exists undoubtedly leads to the vast differences present. They also partially influence the direction and function of the government. Provinces and territories apply unique and separate law. Up until 1858, Canada used several different forms of currency. The separation by land mass and culture directly influenced the progression of Canada. This also helped to define its unique social qualities. The social characteristic to its initial discovery and occupation further connect the two. During the initial European exploration, many native aboriginal tribes came in contact with the new settlers. During the colonization process they were isolated, removed, and in some cases eradicated from their native lands. British and French colonization occurred shortly after the first contact.
