One of which is to protect their handler and their country. When you think about it, these dogs have a lot of weight on their shoulders. There are many possible horrific incidents that can occur in war. The canines are there to limit this encounter and decrease the number of casualties. Yet, these things do still happen and when they do a solider can become gravely injured. For Jose, this became reality. Some soldiers are taken off duty for an accident or maybe the war has come to a halt. Many military workers suffer from disorders like PTSD when they are sent home. These dogs are trained to carry messages, locate bombs, sniff out drugs, locate wounded soldiers, and guard camps. Though only the strongest of breeds are used in the military, a German Shepard cannot survive a detonated IED. It is very important that we look at the dogs as living creatures and not machines. These canines play a very important role in battles. Yet, I still believe that if a handler is relieved of duty, the dog should be as well. As for the other side of the controversy, dogs do have other reasons for the need to stay on duty and receive a new handler. During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan the military had over two thousand canines in use. Over twenty thousand dollars was spent on each of them in training and equipment. The dogs wore highly advanced technology and for a very good reason too. Without the canines our wars would never be fought the same way. Therefore, the dogs also have a great need not to go home with their handler. War is a very dangerous place. With so many causalities, there is a growing need for help on and off the field. These canines do just the job. These causalities can be reduced with the help of the military’s dogs and they truly are. These dogs protect the soldier by their side as well as our country.
