Woodson said, “Negroes are taught to admire the Hebrew, the Greek, the Latin and the Teuton and to despise the African.” This is a powerful statement because African-Americans students are not properly educated on their history, besides the brief history of Negro slavery. Students spend years doing research projects and lessons pertaining to the history of America through the eyes of the White race. Even in today’s society, African-American history is not a main subject, but is offered as an elective. Woodson said “The destroying of one’s history will lead you to the destroying of their future.” He discussed how Whites thought they were more superior than Blacks because of their ‘cultural contributions’ throughout history. Woodson expressed his concern for how African-Americans should not only concern themselves for things that affect them, but also take head in addressing issues faced by others as well. Woodson said that African-Americans should support and vote for a particular party “to reward the dead for some favors done in the distant past.” This is referencing to Black voters supporting the Republican Party because of Abraham Lincoln but shows how Black voter supported the Democratic Party because of Barack Obama. Besides Woodson supporting the fact that African-Americans needed to become more involved in politics, he said they could improve their social lives by contributing to the advancement of the entire society.
