Case Summary
This case study involves a patient, Juan, along with both of his parents and Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Williams. Juan’s family is from the Dominican Republic, which could potentially create a cultural barrier between the doctor and patient. For Juan’s situation, he is 15 years of age and is being brought into treatment by his parents. He was born with unspecified birth defects and also struggles with cystic fibrosis. This type of treatment focuses on identifying the root of the problem and then the patient works together with the therapist to find a solution. Changing habits, behaviors, and specific reactions are all part of CBT (Key Terms, n.d.). Medication has been shown to work well with this treatment plan as well. The way CBT is designed makes it a perfect fit for Juan’s predicament.
Rationale.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy would be the most beneficial for Juan’s situation. It would give him the opportunity to reflect upon his actions in order to problem-solve through his problem. Giving him the responsibility and power to form solutions for his own problems would give him the reassurance that he indeed has control over his life. Even though the solutions would be guided by the psychologist, it would still teach him how to deal with problems in the future. The medication aspect to this would suit Juan very well considering he has cystic fibrosis.
