Interviewing at the Intersection of Nursing and Custodial Care
Data collection
In this paper, skyscape mobile phone nursing application was used to manage data. The study was conducted at an urban healthcare facility that provides nursing and custodial care. However, the facility also provides inpatients and outpatient services to the general population. Those interviewed were the hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Unit Secretary (US) and 4 patients. The quantitative techniques methods provided solutions to mathematical calculations and established descriptive values for data analyzed. However, the values could be misleading because of qualitative factors that are not measurable using quantitative techniques. Factors such as a client’s satisfaction and appreciation of services provided could only be estimated in relative terms. As a result those included for the study were unknown to the interviewers and thus eliminated the possibility of bias. The initial study comprised of ten subjects; the chief medical administrator, chief registered nurse, wards clerk and 4 patients. However, only one patient fulfilled the inclusion criteria and therefore only 4 people proceeded with the study to completion. The population had two males, the chief hospital administrator and ward clerk and two females, the chief nursing officer (CNO) and the patient. The purpose of interview with the head hospital administrator was to seek managerial board approval to carry out the study and also establish administrative logistics that pertains to nursing facilities. The CNO provided the details on the nursing care and quality improvement programs that are present at that health institution. Registered nurses are specifically mandated with providing skilled assistance to patients under nursing care. In contrast, in custodial care activities such as wound dressing, pushing wheelchair and bathing can be delivered with non medical skilled staff. The ward clerk provided records on laboratory reports, patient’s records and other hospital information helpful to nurses, physicians and patients.
