NATO’s two most spectacular antiterrorism operations to date have been Operation Eagle Assist, and Operation Active Endeavour, both of which were among NATO’s first actions following the 9/11 attacks in the US. They are fundamental examples of NATO’s antiterrorism strategy in action. Eagle Assist, which was operated from October 2001 to May 2002, gave direct surveillance support to the US by deploying seven AWACS aircraft over American soil. In all, 830 NATO crew members representing 13 member nations participated in the operation which flew over 360 expeditions over the US. Since Operation Eagle Assist, NATO’s AWACS squadrons have participated in protection actions, by providing airborne control and surveillance for events…
Throughout history there have been countless examples of leader’s effective implementation of the mission command principles. Colonel Puller, an example of one such leader, was the Commander for the 1st Marine Regiment during the invasion and battle of Peleliu. Throughout the 7 days of fighting, he successfully demonstrated the principles of mission command through his use of: building cohesive teams through mutual trust, providing a clear commander’s intent, exercising disciplined initiative, and accepting prudent risk. Even though sustaining over 50 percent casualties in his regiment and having to withdraw from Peleliu he was successful in implementing the principles of mission command.…
Unified land operation is the Army operating concept which is executed through decisive actions and guided by mission command. The Army’s framework for exercising mission command is operations process (plan, prepare, execute, and assess). Embedded by the philosophy and principles of mission command, the commander, supported by his staff, drives the operation process to execute conceptual planning or detailed planning necessary for him to understand, visualize, describe, direct, lead, and continuously assess the operation. The purpose of this paper is to reflect the knowledge I have gained on the philosophy of mission command, warfighting functions and operation process, and cogitate how can I apply it in my future assignment to effectively…
It is December 7, 1941 and Pearl Harbor has been bombed, America is entering World War II. However as war quickly approaches there are problems that arise, such as the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean being in the way of us getting to the enemy. These bodies of water raise many logistical problems, for example how do we transport thousands of soldier with weaponry, food, fuel, and tanks all the way to the Pacific Islands and Europe?…
I want to become a Naval Officer because of the people I have met. The American Legion Post 360 is the sponsor for the local Boy Scout troop and working with those members is what made me want to become a Naval Officer. The members of the Legion were wonderful to work with, and when I worked with them they did not focus on themselves. They focused on what they could do to help the project. This attitude is one I would like to have and becoming an officer paves that way as its goal is to create people who focus on completing the project.…
I am interested in attending the Naval Academy Summer Seminar in the Summer of 2017, because I would like to be introduced to the rigors and challenges that all Midshipmen face while attending the United States Naval Academy. Although I have not received any STEM-related awards, being at the academy would afford me the opportunity to develop friendships with students from around the nation, develop teamwork skills and see what it would be like to push myself in physical and mental situations. Being accepted to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar would be a great honor, and would create opportunities that would help me mature into a Midshipman, that will eventually lead me to develop into a naval officer. I have always wanted to join the…
In June of 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had established the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC) to conduct scientific research to solve the problems underlying the development, production, and use of mechanisms and devices of warfare. Similarly, to an effort that had occurred during World War I under the Council of National Defense. There were several problems impacting the success of the NDRC. The agency had neither the authority nor the money to move research through development and final production. To solve these problems, President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 8807 on June 28, 1941 to establish the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) under the Office for Emergency Management.…
Historically, armed forces adapt tactics and invent new defensive and offensive equipment as a response to adversaries’ technology. The invention of the airplane illustrates this type of advance. Military forces responded to the airplane’s ability to conduct reconnaissance, bomb targets, attack air and ground targets, and perform sustainment operations by developing air defense technology. In World War I, the United States conducted air defense operations using three-inch anti-aircraft guns.…
When PCFR Special Operations arrived, firefighters used a 4x multigas monitor to determine the levels of carbon monoxide, which were well above what is considered dangerous. Watler said the restaurant had levels of more than 500 parts per million. Anything over 50 parts per million is considered hazardous. " That is an extremely high reading," Watler said.…
I believe the Navy JROTC program is an excellent opportunity for me to strengthen my leadership and communication skills, as well as enable me to volunteer in my community and serve as a role model. I take great pride in my academic and personal accomplishments and know the Navy JROTC program will be a tremendous challenge. My parents have instilled in me the principles of integrity, hard work and commitment to duty. My strong core values have shaped my life and I consider these values to be my greatest personal asset. I have been described by teachers as being a student of excellent character, dependable and conscientious.…
Blackwater: In 1997, Al Clark and Erik Prince created Blackwater USA in North Carolina. The initial vision was to provide training support to military and law enforcement organizations. Over the last 1.5 years, the 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) has undergone significant change. Following a nine month deployment to Afghanistan, the Brigade appears to be overcome by stress, fatigue, leadership, and ethics issues. While many might categorize these as normal post deployment occurrences, they appear to run much deeper. The events of the previous deployment coupled with the death of the Brigade Commander, Brigade Sergeant Major and a Battalion Commander appear to be the critical events that triggered the downward slide of the Brigade.…
From the early days of naval service dating all the way back to Oct 13, 1775, certain bedrock principles or core values have carried the United States Navy till this day and many years to come. They consist of three basic principles. These three core values are Honor, Courage, and Commitment. They play a vital role every single time you put on your uniform and lace up your boots you are setting yourself to the standards of the navy which they taught you from P-days day one in boot camp. Boot camp has prepared us for what we can expect in the United States navy (for the most part), and most definitely how to treat one another with and without regards to rank.…
1. There are many decision-making traps WorldCom’s board has succumbed to. One of these trap is relying on one individual to lead and decide the future of the company. The leader of the company, Ebber was conceited, refrained from the truth, and short tempered. He made it visible throughout the company that he did not like negative and only accepted numbers that represent profit.…
“ By the 20th century, military organizations confronted the problem of not only adapting to technological changes in peace time, but also the fact that war itself has inevitably turned up the speed of technological change”. The first Gulf War constitutes a turning point in the history of modern conflicts essentially because of the integration of technology into all levels of military operations. War was always been a declaration of hostility between two opposing groups clashed over a battlefield in a duel with the ultimate aim to impose its will on the other. However, the advent of new technologies has completely changed these legendary and almost static clashes.…
