THE CATTLE INDUSTRY IN AMERICA
Have you ever wondered how cattle got to America? The cattle industry has become an important part of our history. Research on the cattle industry informs us on how and why the cattle industry developed, when and where it did, and how successful it was. Cattle first settled in America from several different sources. Animals.com.me states that Florida claims to be the first place that cattle was introduced into the United States by explorer Ponce de Leon in 1521. Encyclopedia.com lists that 35 percent of cattle are raised in Asia; 23 percent in South America; 17 percent in Africa; 12 percent in North America; 10 percent in Europe; and 3 percent are in Australia. Cattle in other parts of the country are also used for different reasons than the cattle in North America. Without the early explorers and settlers, the ranchers and cowboys, and the businessmen and railroad, we would not be able to enjoy food such as burgers and steaks, and milk and cheese. With beef being the preferred meat of the American consumer (purdue.com), the cattle industry will probably thrive for many years to come!
