Obesity is a medical condition, whereby a person accumulates an excessive amount of body fat, usually 20% and above their ideal body weight. In 2014, world health organisation recorded that over 600 million adults, 18 years and above, as well as 42 million children age 5 and below, were obese. Statistics have shown that obesity is increasing at an alarming rate, the amount of people affected by obesity has more than doubled since 1980. This poses as a serious problem for our society, as obesity leads to many serious health complications, such as heart attack. In order for us to combat this issue, we first need to understand the causes and effects of obesity.

It leads to chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes which may result in kidney failure, stroke or heart attack overtime. High blood pressure is a condition where by blood is pumping at a pressure higher than it normally would in the arteries. Obesity alters a number of hormonal levels in our body, which affects our blood pressure, particularly the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, that controls the volume of blood in our body and the sympathetic nervous system as well as the level of sodium and water retention in the body. Obesity brings about undesirable damages to both our physical and mental well being, ranging from low self esteem and depression to hypertension, diabetes and in severe cases, stroke, heart attack and kidney failure. To prevent ourselves from slipping into obesity, we should reassess our lifestyle. Certainly, we cannot change the environment we live in, however we can take control of our diet and lifestyle. We can start off by cutting down on sugar and fats from chips, replacing them with a healthy snack, like an apple. It can be tiring to go out for a walk or run after a long day at work, but looking at the bright side, it can be seen as a time to refresh yourself. Obesity is a huge problem in modern society, if we do not take any actions, we may find ourselves paying a heavier price at the end of the day.
