We contaminate everything from the air to the ocean and most of us are completely oblivious. Littering is a major way we pollute the environment. People litter without even noticing anymore, a gum wrapper here, a soda bottle there. Some of the litter biodegrades into the soil, but others don’t. Other debris migrates and makes its way to the ocean, contaminating the water and killing marine life. Another way we pollute the environment is, surprisingly through our feces. Our waste releases methane into the air, creating air pollution. Methane enters the atmosphere, where it becomes a potent greenhouse gas (Humes 33). Another major way we pollute the environment is our trash. Landfills are such a major source of pollution that they pollute the air, water, and land. Landfills, like our feces, releases methane into the environment. Methane also seeps into the water underground if they are not properly tended to. Obviously, they pollute the land, burying tons of garbage in the earth. These are only a few ways I can think of that people cause pollution, but there are many …show more content…
According to Colvile, Hutchinson, Mindell, and Warren’s article “The Transport Sector as a Source of Air Pollution”, transport is widely recognized to be a significant and increasing source of air pollution worldwide (1). The first type of emission that comes to mind is car emissions. Transport first became a significant source of air pollution after the problems of sooty smog from coal combustion had largely been solved in western European and North American cities (Colvile et al.1). There are billions of cars around the world spewing pollution into the air with every mile they travel. With a few exceptions, all modes of transport emit air pollution from the combustion of liquid fossil fuel (Colvile et al. 2). The air pollution emissions generated during use of any form of transport are only a part of the total amount of air pollution generated by transport-related activity (Colvile et al. 2). Another source of machine emissions is factories, like power plants and nuclear facilities. Power plants emit pollution from their tall smoke stacks. Nuclear facilities, of course, spew radiation and toxic waste into the environment. Like people, there are many other ways machine emissions pollute our
