Cellular respiration is a metabolic process that allows organisms to convert stored energy in the chemical bonds of glucose, or sugar. Most of the time this process is aerobic, which means oxygen is required to generate energy from the chemical bonds in glucose. Our bodies need energy for all kind of activities. Even when the body is resting, it requires a lower amount of energy (Budhram,2016). However for more demanding activities, more energy is needed. You can determine a persons rate of cellular respiration by measuring the rate at which oxygen is consumed (Budhram,2016). The more oxygen a person consumes while exercising, the higher rate of cellular respiration (Budhram,2016). Cellular respiration has a huge rule in exercising …show more content…
A person with more muscle percentage (healthier person) will consume more oxygen while exercising, and they will have a higher rate of cellular respiration. The person with more fat percentage (less fit person) will produce less oxygen while exercising and they will have a lower rate of cellular …show more content…
treadmill ergometer
2. VO2 Max machine (One mask with a plastic piece attached to it for measuring oxygen inhalation and carbon dioxide exhalation in order to calculate the ratio of VCO2 and VO2)
3. heart rate monitor
4. Stopwatch
5. Computer system
6. 2 chairs
Lab Setup/ Safety Precautions:
1. For each individual, make sure they are wearing proper athletic wear like running shoes, yoga pants, ect
2. If an individual is lightheaded or looks sick, please stop the lab
3. Make sure the Vo2, heart rate monitor, computer system, and treadmill are all plugged in and working.
4. Double check to make sure none of the equipment is broken like frayed wires.
Experimental Design:
An environmental condition that will have to stay constant is the temperature. The outside air temperature can affect VO2 max because it is easier to consume more oxygen in warmer temperatures (Myers, C,2013)
Procedure:
1. In the observation table you will state the average consumption of oxygen at rest which is 3 ml/kg/min.
2. Place the VO2 max machine on the runner and have them sit down in a
